Welcome everyone! My name is Lindsay King and I'm your Secretary this year. Occasionally, such as nights like this, I might be bringing you the agenda a little bit later in the evening than usual. The reason for this is that I'm involved with something really awesome called the Senior Gift Committee, which has been a Cal tradition since 1874. Sometimes there are Wednesday meetings right after Rally Committee, but it's ok! I'll still be getting you the agenda as soon as I can :) I'll get to the chase and you know what went down at tonight's meeting.
Welcome!
Our Chair Ashley wanted to personally thank all of you in the room who went on roadtrip. She says that every year of her roadtrip experience has gotten better and better, and to top it off, and I quote, "we fucking won! I don't think it can get any better!." She says she'll just have to graduate so it can't :)
So You Think You Can Be a Mic Man?
Tonight Head Mic Man and former Rally Committee member Ian Villaneuva came to announce upcoming Mic Man auditions. It's important to note that 2 of the last 3 Mic Men picked to this illustrious position have been former Committee members. Ian will be forwarding me, your secretary, the application form. The audition process consists of an application, and interview, and a 2-3 minute tryout in front of the student section during a home game. The sequence is as follows: November 3rd, there will be a meeting to go sign up for an interview, and on the 5th interviews will be held. Afterwards, the Cal Athletic Department will be holding tryouts.
Ian stresses that the job is a big time commitment, but you get to travel with the team to basketball and football, hang out with the dance team, and it's open to both guys and gals. He strongly encourages any interested parties to please please apply! The application is attached to this agenda. Applications are due to Diane Milano in room 77E of Haas Pavilion.
Roadtrip Slideshow!
Was really awesome. Our historians rock. You should have been there! It's ok, there will always be more :)
*Ahem* SPORTS!!!!
So...we know that many of you are headed down south with the Committee this weekend. However, if you aren't, we highly encourage you head out to sports with fellow members or friends! See below for details:
Friday, October 23rd: Women's Volleyball v. No. 16 Arizona at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Night! Wear pink, waist your rugby, and support chesticles!
Saturday, October 24th: Men's Waterpolo v. Pepperdine at 11 am at Spieker. Be there or be square.
Sunday, October 25th: Women's Volleyball v. ASU at 1 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
It's All in the Cards...
Card sorting is so fun! And it enables us to put on the best damn stunt shows ever (so good, in fact, that a few years ago, EBay had committee members teach them how to do it for a conference!). However, we couldn't have card stunts if we didn't sort and we couldn't sort if we didn't have Y-O-U. Why is this important? Laurel is having a card sorting TOMORROW, October 22nd at Memorial Stadium from 10-3.Yeah, we know its five hours of sorting tomorrow...but you don't have to come for all five! Come for half an hour, or an hour, or even two if suits your fancy. It's really important that you come out, or else gate time will be pushed even earlier to make sure we can sort and have enough cards for the stunt! Laurel has also promised both a morning AND an afternoon snack. Now that's tasty....
*N*o*o*n* R*a*l*l*y*
You know the drill! 12 o'clock noon at the Sproul steps. Wear your rugby, and in the wisdom of Tim Gunn, "Make it work!" Get excited for what could potentially be the BIGGEST Touchdown Monday of the year!!
Cookie Baking..om nom nom nom.....
Of course, Midnight Singing wouldn't be half as special without some great goodies to fill your stomachs afterward. And seriously, who doesn't want to start the earliest moments of game day on a sugar high? You can help make some of the magical deliciousness at cookie baking. Baking this week will be held:
When: On Friday, October 23rd after noon rally!
Where: At Ryann Pollock's house, at 2216 Parker Street.
Why: Because you like cookies...and Cal football!
Midnight Singing..fa la la la la :)
Come out to Midnight Singing! This week's singing will be at the reflecting pool at the western edge of Memorial Glade near Moffit Library. Why come, you ask? Well....I don't know, but I think it might be important to know my Cal songs for gameday! Midnight singing is also one of the best ways to practice. Come sing, come mingle, and come eat baked goods afterwards!
FOOTBALL V. WSU!!!
Alright guys and gals, we're back in this game! Our football team showed us they wouldn't not give and they wouldn't not give in. Those boys showed us on the road how to play like a team: with solidarity! So let's have equal solidarity with our team: Rally Comm! A few notes about gate time:
Because of pertinent change to game time policy from Cal Athletics, rather than calling your name off and handing you a wristband as we've gone the past few games this season, we will be calling your name off the Gate 1 right in front of North Tunnel so that we can let you in the stadium right away. What does this mean for you?
1) You need to be 100% positive that your full name is on the gate list. Ruben will be sending out a preliminary gate list on Thursday and a final gate list on Friday. Check your email on Thursday and Friday to double and TRIPLE check that your name is on it!
2) You need to be at gate time NO LATER THAN 9:59:59. In fact, we STRONGLY encourage you to come at 9:50. The reason for this is that if you miss gate time, the Rally Committee has no jurisdiction to let you in. This is all controlled by Athletics. If you are late to gate time, there is nothing we can do for you.
3) It would be a very very good idea to bring your student ID with you just in case Athletics would like to check your ID against the gate list.
We also need everyone to be on time so we can set up the card stunt! so be there! :)
Game Day Jobs
For every home game we've got, we've also got some awesome game day jobs. These are the heart and soul of your game day with the Committee, so don't miss out! No need to worry, though. If you haven't had a chance to a game day job you've wanted to yet, we've still got plenty of games left!
Please also remember that if you are doing a game day job, you need to wear khaki pants or shorts and brown or black close toed shoes. The only exception to the khaki rule is if you are on Cannon Crew, for obvious reasons.
Here's a quick run down of game day jobs:
Cannon Crew
One of the best damn jobs you can do! Yeah, you're outside the stadium, but the view is unparalleled and you get to send the opposing team a metaphorical, explosive, UN 1.4G "SUCK IT!" Now, what could top that? Oh yeah, that's right...firing the victory shot :) Don't miss out! For more information, contact your UC Cannoneers Becca and Patrick at ucrc.cannoneers@gmail.com.
Cal Flags!
Some of the most visible symbols the Committee keeps care of are the Cal Flags waved on the field. We do a run out with them, wave them at the beginning of the game, and every time a Cal song is played by the band. If you're doing flags as a game day job, you get to wave for a quarter. For more info, contact your Director of Athletics, Dustin Shean, at ucrc.athletics@gmail.com.
Banner GUARD
Yet another amazing game day job! Keep random kleptomaniacs and plotting, evil Toejams from stealing our beloved banner while spending a quarter of the game at the top of the Student section with your DOS, John Clemons. You can see all the game plays unfold and get some cookies in the process :) For more info, contact John Clemons at ucrc.security@gmail.com.
Spirit Signs!
Spirit signs are an amazing opportunity to be on the field and PUMP UP the crowd! Cheer on your Bears while encouraging other fans to do so as well! For more information, contact your Vice Chair of Spirit, Briana Tischener, at ucrc.vcspirit@gmail.com.
Walking Banner
Walking Banner is a unique and exciting game day tradition at Cal! You get to attend the pre-game Rally on Sproul plaza and lead the California Walker Banner with the Cal Band, the Dance team, Oski, the Mic Men, and hundreds of other tried and true Old Blues to Memorial Stadium. If you have any questions about this game day job, please contact your Secretary, Lindsay King, at ucrc.secretary@gmail.com.
Coat Check
Wanna check out the Hall of Fame room? Think you'd like to chat up some alumni and get some free lunch in the process? Then coat check is for you! You can take coats for these lovely Old Blues, eat, and then enjoy the game! For more info, contact Lindsay King at ucrc.secretary@gmail.com.
Card Stunts!
At almost every home game, we have a kick butt card stunt show. We set up these stunts and reward ourselves afteward with Cheesy Sticks, aka, Heaven in bread and cheese form. For more information, contact Laurel Johnescu at ucrc.stunts@gmail.com.
S-P-E-L-L-O-U-T!
Last but not least, we have the CALIFORNIA spellout! Paint yourself, and get (half) naked on television! You might even end up on TV or in Sports Illustrated. Make sure to bring sunscreen if its a day game and if you are female, wear a white sports bra! For more info, contact Sara Leon at sara_leon@gmail.com.
Membershippp.....Rocks Your World.
This week the membership branch brings more awesome events, activities, and opportunities to get involved!
Sign up for Theta Dodgeball with Rally Comm!
Tonight Megan talked about Theta Dodgeball, which is an event put on by Kappa Alpha Theta, a sorority in which your very own historian, Margaret Hatch, is a sister! Theta Dodgeball is a dodgeball tournament to be held on November 8th from 12-3 at the RSF to raise money for CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, which is an amazing program. Basically, children whose parents or guardians can't or won't speak in their interest in court are assigned advocates who will. Your Chair, Ashley, is one such Court Appointed Special Advocate! She strongly encourages you to get involved in the tournament.
To participate, you'll need a team of 8, need to register with Megan, and pay your 80 dollar registration fee, which works out to 10 bucks a person. For more information, please contact Megan Gritsch at ucrc.communityrelations@gmail.com.
You TOO CAN Golf Like Tiger Woods...Well, sort of...
You may be no future PGA star, but for one special evening, you can GOLF like a pro! What do I mean by that? You can participate in the Rally Committee's annual Halloween party: GOLF PARTY!! What is golf party? Golf party is unique in that it's a progressive, or traveling, party. There will be four apartments, or "holes," which will have four different challenges. Oh yeah...you're in teams, too! Each team has to have an old member, a new member, a boy member, and a girl member. Your team will also come up with its own theme and costumes.
Golf Party will be held the evening of Friday, October 30th. If you want to participate, you'll need to assemble a team, sign up with Courtney, and pay your registration fee of $20, or 5 per person per team. If you have any questions, contact Courtney at ucrc.memberevents@gmail.com.
Big Game Week is COMING! Prepare to have your life CHANGED!
With Big Game Week coming, ExComm and all of the Rally Committee is gearing up for a wonderful week of fantastic spirit and incredible tradition! It's our favorite holiday. That said, a couple announcements:
Special Events and Rallies Subcommittees
Both Katie, your Director of Special Events, and Jessica, your Director of Rallies, will be having subcommittees again for Big Game Week. Katie will be sending out applications for the subcommittee, as will Jessica. However, if you were on a previous subcommittee of Jessica's and want to participate in her BGW subcomm, just let her know. Both applications will be sent out through rally announce for members who would like to apply to either subcommittee. Questions? Contact Katie (ucrc.specialevents@gmail.com) or Jessica (ucrc.rallies@gmail.com).
Big Game Week T-Shirt Design Contest!
Your Marketing branch will be holding a contest for BGW t-shirt designs! We need two designs for two different shirts: one will become the Committee's annual BGW shirt, and the other the Committee's BGW giveaway shirt. Your design will need to relate to the BGW theme this year, which is "Beware the Bear." Send your designs to Ryann, your Vice Chair of Marketing, at ucrc.marketing@gmail.com by next Tuesday at Midnight. Designs will be voted on!
Marketing: bringing you spirited discounts!
The marketing branch wants to remind you of a few things:
Blue and Gold Days!
For awesome discounts, wear your Cal gear on Fridays and patronize the following businesses!:
Touchdown Mondays!
More discounts brought to you by your Marketing Branch! You'll get 3 percent off per touchdown that the football team makes at the student store on Monday. Go cheer on the Bears and then buy some Cal gear!
An Important Announcement from Your Chair
If you take anything away from this agenda, Ash wants it to be this: BIG GAME is EXACTLY one month from today. In exactly one month, Ashley will march onto the field of Stanfurd Stadium holding our axe. In exactly one month, she wants to leave Stanfurd's field holding our axe. You will also have gone through your first (or second, or third, or fourth...WOO SENIORS!) BGW will the Rally Committee and your life will NOT be the same!
Because it's Big Game, Stanford will become more interested in our campus. They will also get more interested in what the groups that protects the campus's symbols does. They wanna know what we’re up to! They would love to sit in one of these meetings. Thus, from now until after Big Game Week, we will be holding closed meetings. This means that you need to bring your student ID to meetings so that your Director of Security, John, can check your name and ID against his list! This is super important. Do it...or else!
Bear Basics: Things You Need to Know About Cal Before You Die and Other Fun Tidbits
Tonight your Director of Traditions Michael shared a bit about the history of Memorial Stadium:
Memorial Stadium is the home of the Golden Bears and is considered one the finest and most storied football stadiums in the nation. Designed by campus architect John Galen Howard and built from 1921 to 1923 with one million dollars earned by the ASUC from selling ten-year double tickets at the cost of $100.00, it was finally dedicated at the Big Game on November 24, 1923. Cal won the first game played in Memorial–defeating Stanfurd 9-0.
Memorial Stadium is named in memory of California alumni who died fighting in the first World War. It is also called “The House that Andy Built” because the stadium was built was as a result of the success of the teams of Coach Andrew Latham Smith.
That's all for now folks. Gear up for a kick-ass weekend!
